iPhone Duo Hidden Features: 4 Things Apple Didn’t Mention

Apple’s first foldable has features Apple never showed on stage. The first full reviews went up on 21 October 2026, and between them they turned up the most interesting iPhone Duo hidden features: a virtual ring light for video calls, a sideways version of Reachability that isn’t finished yet, and a screen setting built for chunky cases.

Apple announced the iPhone Duo on 9 September 2026. It starts at $1,999, opened for pre-order on 16 October and goes on sale on 23 October. Here is what the keynote left out, and which of these features you will actually get on day one.

Key takeaways

  • Edge Light, the Mac’s virtual ring light, works on the Duo’s 7.6-inch inner screen during video calls.
  • Horizontal Reachability is coming, but Apple says it won’t arrive until “later this year”, after launch.
  • Shift Left Edge adds a wider black border on the outer screen so that bulky cases don’t cover your content.
  • Apps that haven’t been rebuilt for iOS 27.1 run letterboxed, with black bars down the sides.

What are the iPhone Duo hidden features reviewers found?

AppleInsider gathered the first batch on review day. Other outlets have filled in the details since. None of these features was a headline in Apple’s September presentation, and two of them aren’t finished.

FeatureWhat it doesStatus on 23 October 2026
Edge LightLights the edges of the inner screen to light your face on video callsAvailable; colour temperature control reportedly unfinished
Horizontal ReachabilityMoves content sideways so you can reach both edges of the screenNot at launch; due “later this year”
Shift Left EdgeWidens the left bezel on the outer screen for cases that overlap itAvailable in display settings
LetterboxingRuns older apps with black side barsApplies until developers update their apps

How does Edge Light work on a phone?

Edge Light arrived on Apple silicon Macs in late 2025. It turns the border of your screen into a soft, glowing frame. The idea is simple: your display is already a big light source pointed at your face, so why not use it as a ring light?

MacRumors reports that the Duo supports it on the inner display during FaceTime and other video calls, after Miles Franklin (MilesAboveTech) spotted it and posted about it on X. His images also show a Control Centre option that turns it on automatically. Code found in the iOS 27 release candidate in September suggested the colour temperature slider was still a work in progress, so the phone version may not yet match every control on the Mac.

This makes the Duo the first iPhone with Edge Light. Even iPads don’t have it.

Why does the iPhone Duo need sideways Reachability?

Reachability arrived with the iPhone 6 in 2014. You swipe down on the bottom of the screen and the top half of the interface slides down to your thumb. That fixes tall phones. The Duo has the opposite problem, because both of its screens are wider than any other iPhone’s.

According to 9to5Mac, citing WIRED’s Julian Chokkattu, the Duo version will move content horizontally so people with smaller hands can reach the left and right edges with a tap. Apple says it won’t be ready until later this year. Apple hasn’t said whether it will work on the outer screen, the inner screen or both.

Left-handed people need it most. The dock and app controls sit on the right edge. Marques Brownlee called it “a very right-handed phone”, and CNET’s Abrar Al-Heeti found no way to move the controls to the left.

What is Shift Left Edge, and do you need it?

This one surfaced in September, during hands-on time after the launch event. Shift Left Edge sits in the display settings and roughly doubles the black border on the left side of the outer screen. Apple’s own description says it “moves content when you are using a case that partially covers the left edge of the outer display.”

Think of it like moving a picture away from a frame that’s slightly too small. Nothing gets hidden behind the lip of a rugged case, and the iOS back-swipe gesture still works. Apple’s two first-party cases aren’t known to cover that edge, so this is mainly for bulky third-party cases.

What did Apple underplay about Smart Take and apps?

Smart Take was announced. It uses on-device AI on the A20 Pro chip to take the shot automatically when your subjects are posing. What Apple didn’t mention is the cost: according to the MacStories review roundup, The Verge found it can make the phone hot enough to lag.

Apps are the other quiet catch. Any app not rebuilt with the iOS 27.1 SDK (Apple’s toolkit for developers) runs letterboxed, with black bars on the sides. The Verge called the partly updated apps a “messy middle”. Max Weinbach said nearly half of his apps were updated within about six days.

Not every surprise is bad. 9to5Mac’s Chance Miller noticed that because the Duo can lie flat on a table, you can rest a finger on the Touch ID button to read locked notifications without picking it up. That’s handy on a phone that has no Face ID.

What happens next

Several fixes are already scheduled. Apple Pencil support is in the iOS 27.2 beta, and horizontal Reachability is promised before the end of 2026. Developers are updating their apps quickly, so the letterboxing should shrink week by week. Apple’s next event is on 28 October; our preview of the Pro and Tell event covers what may come with it.

My opinion: the Duo is a first-generation phone, and software will fix many of its rough edges. Joanna Stern said much the same in her review. But if you’re left-handed, wait until Reachability actually ships before you spend $1,999.

FAQ

Does the iPhone Duo have Edge Light?

Yes. Edge Light works on the 7.6-inch inner display during FaceTime and other video calls, lighting the screen’s edges like a ring light. It is the first iPhone to support it.

Is Reachability available on the iPhone Duo at launch?

No. Apple says a horizontal version of Reachability will arrive in a software update later in 2026. It won’t be there when the phone goes on sale on 23 October 2026.

What does the Shift Left Edge setting do?

It roughly doubles the black border on the left of the outer screen, so a case that overlaps that edge doesn’t hide content or block the back-swipe gesture.

If you pre-ordered a Duo, check Settings for Shift Left Edge and the Control Centre for Edge Light on day one, then watch for the update that brings Reachability.
