On 26 October 2026 the NBA named Kalshi and Polymarket its “Preferred Prediction Market Exchanges” and announced a memorandum of understanding with the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The NBA prediction markets package pairs commercial rights with an integrity framework, and it explains why Polymarket is trending in the UK.

Key takeaways

  • The NBA announced three things on 26 October 2026: a CFTC memorandum of understanding, Kalshi and Polymarket as preferred exchanges, and a wider DraftKings deal.
  • The league bans its own and teams’ personnel from trading NBA event contracts.
  • Preferred exchanges get NBA branding rights and official data from Sportradar.
  • MLB and the NHL signed similar deals earlier, so the NBA is following a template.

What exactly did the NBA announce?

According to the NBA’s own release, the league signed an MOU with the CFTC focused on cooperation and information sharing. It also designated Kalshi and Polymarket as preferred exchanges, and expanded its agreement with DraftKings to cover prediction markets and nationwide promotion.

The league says it plans to expand relationships with other official sports betting partners and industry participants in the coming weeks. The Athletic reported the news as a partnership with Kalshi and Polymarket.

What is a prediction market?

A prediction market is an exchange where people trade contracts tied to a future event. A contract typically pays $1 if the event happens and nothing if it does not, so its price works as a rough crowd estimate of likelihood. Kalshi and Polymarket are the two best-known platforms for this.

Think of it as a stock market where the “company” is a yes-or-no question. The legal question is whether sports contracts on these exchanges are financial products or something closer to sports wagering. That argument is still live in the courts.

What is in the integrity framework?

The NBA lists four pillars. They are limits on which markets are permitted, a ban on league and team personnel trading NBA event contracts, duties to share information about investigations and suspicious trading, and the CFTC cooperation channel.

Operators in the programme will carry integrity obligations and market restrictions that match the NBA’s latest sports betting restrictions. Scott Kaufman-Ross, the NBA’s Head of Media Distribution & Partnerships, said: “Protecting the integrity of the game is our top priority.”

What do Kalshi and Polymarket get?

Preferred exchanges receive rights to use NBA intellectual property, marketing rights and promotional activations across US media channels. They also get official NBA data from Sportradar, the league’s data distribution partner, to run and settle authorised markets.

Ari Borod, Polymarket’s President of Sports Business Development, said the deal “will allow our customers to engage more deeply with the game of basketball on Polymarket.” Kalshi’s Adam Barrick called it “a significant milestone.” Financial terms were not disclosed in the NBA release.

How does it compare with MLB and the NHL?

MLB (March 2026)Polymarket, exclusiveCFTC MOU, reported as the first with a major league

The Block’s coverage of MLB’s deal describes restrictions on contracts tied to individual pitches, manager decisions and umpire performance. Commissioner Gary Bettman has said the NHL’s deals keep the league “in control” of what contracts exist.

Why is this controversial?

The timing is awkward. The Verge framed the move as a response to gambling scandals that adds more gambling partnerships. Earlier reporting noted that Commissioner Adam Silver spoke about prediction markets in the same week two NBA figures appeared in a Brooklyn federal court over an illegal betting case.

The legal backdrop is unsettled too. Front Office Sports reported that a Ninth Circuit panel sided with Nevada in finding that Kalshi’s sports contracts function as sports betting. The CFTC has also sued Arizona, Connecticut and Illinois over state efforts to regulate these markets.

My opinion: the framework is a real step, because information sharing with a regulator is more than a logo deal. But a promise to share data only matters if suspicious trading is actually acted on, and that is untested.

What happens next

The NBA says more partner announcements are coming in the following weeks. Watch for the CFTC’s rulemaking on sports event contracts, any court ruling on the state-versus-federal fight, and whether the NFL, which has said it wants a regulatory framework first, follows the other leagues.

FAQ

Is Polymarket the NBA’s only partner?

No. Kalshi is named alongside it as a preferred exchange, and DraftKings’ agreement was expanded to include prediction markets.

What does the CFTC memorandum do?

It sets up cooperation and information sharing between the league and the regulator on integrity. Reporting on MLB’s similar pact noted it does not supersede any laws or regulations.

Can NBA staff trade these contracts?

No. The framework prohibits league and team personnel from trading NBA event contracts.
