Chocolate Lay’s chips are coming back. Lay’s Wavy Milk Chocolate and a new Lay’s Wavy Dubai-Style Dark Chocolate with pistachio reach select US stores on 1 December 2026, as the sweet finale of a five-flavor holiday lineup announced on 19 October 2026.

That announcement is why search interest jumped to around 20,000 US searches in a day. Here is what is launching, when it lands, and why a chip brand is borrowing from a candy bar that went viral on TikTok.

Key takeaways

  • Two chocolate-coated Wavy chips, Milk Chocolate and Dubai-Style Dark Chocolate, hit select retailers on 1 December 2026 and expand in 2027.
  • They close out a five-flavor “Holi-LAY’S” lineup that also includes Roasted Holiday Turkey, Cheddar Scalloped-Style Potatoes and Maple Bacon.
  • Chocolate Lay’s are not new. A milk chocolate Wavy chip first sold at Target in late 2013 for $3.49 a bag.
  • The dark chocolate version leans on the Dubai chocolate craze: chocolate plus pistachio.
  • Lay’s has not published prices or a full store list for the 2026 chocolate chips.

What are the new chocolate Lay’s chips?

According to the official Lay’s press release, both are Wavy chips, the ridged cut, coated in chocolate. Lay’s Wavy Milk Chocolate is the straightforward one. Lay’s Wavy Dubai-Style Dark Chocolate pairs dark chocolate with pistachio.

The Wavy cut matters more than it sounds. Ridges give the coating more surface to hold onto, and the thicker chip is less likely to snap under a layer of chocolate. A flat chip with chocolate on it is a broken chip waiting to happen.

When and where can you buy them?

The chocolate pair is the last of the holiday flavors to arrive. Lay’s says they come to “select retailers” first and expand in 2027. The savory flavors launch earlier and more widely.

All five are limited-time flavors. Lay’s has not said how long each will stay on shelves, so if you want a bag, don’t count on finding one in February.

Haven’t chocolate Lay’s chips been done before?

Yes. In November 2013, Frito-Lay launched Lay’s Wavy Original Potato Chips Dipped in Milk Chocolate for the holiday season, sold only at Target. A 5-ounce bag had a suggested price of $3.49, WTKR reported. The company said it would think about making the chip permanent if the test went well.

It never became a year-round product. Since then, chocolate Lay’s chips have come back from time to time as limited editions, including a dark chocolate Wavy version. The 2026 release is a familiar product with a new twist.

What is “Dubai-style” chocolate, and why is it on a chip?

Dubai chocolate began with FIX Dessert Chocolatier, a Dubai company founded by Sarah Hamouda, which launched a bar called “Can’t Get Knafeh Of It” in 2021. It is filled with pistachio cream, tahini and crunchy toasted kataifi (shredded pastry dough), according to Egyptian Streets. After a TikTok video of someone eating one went viral in late 2023, copycat bars spread around the world.

Lay’s isn’t the only big brand cashing in. In autumn 2026, Wonderful Pistachios launched its own Dubai chocolate flavor, The Shelby Report noted. Once a trend reaches the snack aisle, “Dubai-style” mostly just means “chocolate plus pistachio”.

One caveat: Lay’s lists only dark chocolate and pistachio. It does not mention kataifi or tahini, so don’t expect a chip-shaped copy of the original bar.

Why does salty-sweet work at all?

Think of salted caramel or a pretzel dipped in chocolate. Salt cuts the sweetness so the chocolate tastes less one-note, and the crunch breaks up the creamy coating. A potato chip does the same job with more grease and more salt.

Lay’s has run this play before. Its Salted Caramel chip came back for the 2025 holidays, which shows the brand sees sweet-savory as a seasonal treat rather than a gimmick.

Opinion: the dark chocolate pistachio chip is the smart bet. Milk chocolate on a salty chip is pleasant but familiar. Dark chocolate is less sugary and pistachio adds a nutty note, so it has a better shot at being something you actually go back to.

What do the other holiday flavors taste like?

The Food Network tester said Roasted Holiday Turkey smells right away of poultry seasoning, with thyme, sage and an umami note like crisp turkey skin. Cheddar Scalloped-Style Potatoes tasted more savory than a standard cheddar chip, with parmesan, black pepper and herbs. The tester did not try the chocolate flavors.

Lay’s is also running a Happy Holi-LAY’S sweepstakes from 26 October 2026: you scan qualifying bags or visit HappyHoli-Lays.com to enter. Prizes include chip bowls and a Lay’s x Le Creuset casserole. What happens next

  • 25 October 2026: Turkey and Cheddar Scalloped-Style Potatoes go on sale nationwide.
  • 8 November 2026: Maple Bacon makes its US debut.
  • 1 December 2026: Both chocolate Wavy chips reach select retailers.
  • 2027: Lay’s plans to roll the chocolate chips out to more stores.

Keep an eye on that 2027 expansion. In 2013, Lay’s tied a permanent chocolate chip to sales, and a wider rollout is usually how a brand tests whether a seasonal hit can last.
