Saudi FII Postponed to 2027: Why Davos in the Desert Is Off

The Saudi FII has been postponed. On 19 October 2026, organisers of the Future Investment Initiative, the Riyadh summit nicknamed “Davos in the Desert”, pulled the 10th edition one week before it was due to open on 26 October, and moved it to 2027.

The official reason is about quality. The real pressure is security: weeks of Houthi missile and drone attacks on the kingdom had made bankers and CEOs think twice about flying to Riyadh.

Key takeaways

  • FII10 was scheduled for 26-29 October 2026 in Riyadh. It will now happen in 2027, with new dates promised “very soon”.
  • The decision follows a run of Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including a deadly strike on King Khalid International Airport earlier in October 2026.
  • Big names such as JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon and BlackRock’s Larry Fink were on the speaker list.
  • A hybrid, part-remote format was floated on 14 October 2026 but did not save the event.
  • FII is not alone: several other Saudi conferences, a golf event and an EU-Gulf summit have also been pushed back.

Why was the Saudi FII postponed?

Organisers made the call on Monday, 19 October 2026, and messaged registered participants that the conference was off for now, The Circuit reported. Participants had grown reluctant to travel to Riyadh while deadly Houthi attacks continued.

The Houthis are an Iran-aligned armed group based in Yemen. Their attacks on Saudi airports and infrastructure have disrupted flights in the kingdom. A strike on Riyadh’s main international airport earlier in October killed more than a dozen people and injured hundreds, according to Jewish Insider.

FII’s chief executive, Princess Maha bint Mishari Al Saud, framed the delay differently. She told The National that the decision “comes from a deep commitment to our partners, members, speakers and delegates”, adding: “A decade of partnership and shared vision deserves nothing less than our absolute best.”

What is “Davos in the Desert” and why does it matter?

FII launched in 2017. It is run by the FII Institute, which is backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF). The nickname borrows from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, because it draws the same crowd: heads of state, fund managers and Wall Street chiefs.

Think of it as a shop window. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman uses it to sell Vision 2030, his plan to wean the Saudi economy off oil by pulling in foreign money for tourism, tech, mining and mega-projects. Deals and memorandums get signed on stage, and headlines follow.

That is why skipping a year stings. The 10th edition was meant to be a milestone, and the 2026 speaker list, which included Dimon and Fink, signalled that Wall Street was still showing up.

Did organisers try to keep it alive?

Yes. On 14 October 2026, Reuters reported that Saudi Arabia planned to let executives attend remotely, as carried by Devdiscourse. Some guests were expected to land at airstrips outside Riyadh or in neighbouring Gulf states and drive in.

Five days later the plan was dropped. A hybrid summit only works if the stars still come in person, and several Wall Street executives were reportedly rethinking the trip.

Which other Saudi events have been hit?

FII is the biggest name on a growing list. Here is how the main delays compare, based on reports from The National, Reuters, The Circuit and Al-Monitor.

Messe Frankfurt, which runs Intersec Saudi Arabia, said its decision put the safety of exhibitors, visitors and staff first. The Saudi International golf event was also postponed, The Circuit reported on 16 October 2026.

What does the delay mean for investors and Vision 2030?

In the short term, nothing breaks. Money does not stop moving because a conference is cancelled, and many FII-style deals are negotiated months before anyone gets on stage.

The bigger cost is perception. Vision 2030 depends on persuading foreign firms that Riyadh is a safe, predictable place to build offices, data centres and resorts. When a string of flagship events is shelved within a few weeks, that pitch gets harder, especially for tourism and events, which are themselves Vision 2030 sectors.

There is a precedent. In 2018, many Western executives skipped FII after the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and the summit bounced back in later years. Our view, clearly opinion: a security-driven delay is easier to recover from than a reputational boycott, as long as the attacks stop.

What happens next

  • New dates. Organisers say 2027 dates will be announced “very soon”. Watch whether they pick spring or wait for the usual October slot.
  • The security picture. Any return of normal flight schedules into Riyadh will be the clearest sign that big events can resume.
  • More cancellations. Event organisers with dates in late 2026 will be making the same call FII just made.
  • Deal flow. Look for PIF and partners to announce deals through other channels, such as press releases or overseas roadshows, rather than wait for 2027.

FAQ

When was FII 2026 supposed to take place?
