HarmonyOS 7 hyperspace storage gives you back space without deleting a single file. Huawei says it can free up to 109GB on a 1TB phone, and its sister feature, hyperspace memory, squeezes up to 3GB of extra usable RAM out of a 16GB handset.
On 22 October 2026, Huawei published its fullest explanation yet of how both tricks work inside the Ark Engine, its in-house runtime layer. Here is what the features do, the claims behind them, and what is still unproven.
Key takeaways
- Hyperspace storage keeps one copy of a file that several apps have saved, and compresses apps you rarely open.
- Huawei claims savings of up to 22GB on 256GB phones, 51GB on 512GB phones and 109GB on 1TB phones after upgrading from HarmonyOS 6.
- Hyperspace memory compresses app data in RAM so more apps stay alive in the background, adding up to 3GB on 16GB devices.
- Huawei says the memory upgrade reaches 60+ device models. All the figures are Huawei’s own and have not been independently tested.
What is HarmonyOS 7 hyperspace storage, exactly?
It is a system-level clean-up that runs quietly in the background. You do not need to dig through folders or clear caches yourself. According to IT之家’s write-up of Huawei’s 22 October explainer, it uses two techniques.
The first is deduplication: finding identical files and keeping only one. Think of a meme saved by WeChat, a browser and a photo editor. Before, that could mean three copies on disk. Now there is one source file, and each app keeps its own entry point and “shortcut” to it. You can still open and edit the file as normal.
The second is in-place block compression. Based on how you use your phone, the system shrinks apps you rarely open, in small blocks rather than as one big archive. When you do open one, only the blocks it needs are decompressed. Huawei says this avoids the stutter that older whole-app compression caused when you launched a sleeping app.
How much space could you actually get back?
Huawei gave these numbers when it launched HarmonyOS 7 in Guangzhou on 7 September 2026, as Shanghai Securities News reported. They are “up to” figures for phones upgraded from HarmonyOS 6.
| Phone storage | Maximum space recovered | Share of total |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | 22GB | About 8.6% |
| 512GB | 51GB | About 10% |
| 1TB | 109GB | About 10.6% |
Don’t expect the number to jump the minute you update. Huawei device chief He Gang said some of the compression runs only while the phone is charging with the screen off, so it can take a few days to show up.
What does hyperspace memory change?
RAM (random-access memory) is your phone’s working desk. It decides how many apps can stay open at once. When the desk fills up, the system “kills” background apps to keep the one in front of you smooth. That is why a game or a half-written form sometimes reloads from scratch when you switch back to it.
Hyperspace memory raises the compression ratio of app data held in RAM, so each app takes up less room. Fewer apps get killed. Huawei says a 16GB phone gains up to 3GB of effective memory, and the improved “keep-alive” behaviour reaches more than 60 models.
Compressing RAM isn’t new. Android phones have long used similar compressed-swap tricks. Huawei’s pitch is about the ratio and how well it is tuned to the Ark Engine, and that is hard to judge from a press graphic.
Which phones get it, and when did it arrive?
The rollout came in steps:
- June 2026: first developer beta on 7 flagship devices, according to Gizchina.
- Late July 2026: closed beta grows to more than 40 devices.
- 7 September 2026: HarmonyOS 7 launches and the public beta opens. The first wave includes the Mate 80, Mate 70, Pura 90, Pura 80, nova 16 and Mate X7.
- 17 September 2026: older phones, including the Mate 60 series, Mate X5 and Pura 70 series, join the “Pollen” fan beta and get both hyperspace features, IT之家 reported.
- 28 September 2026: hyperspace storage support spans the Mate, Pura, Pocket, nova and Enjoy phone lines, plus MatePad tablets and the MateBook Pro.

Why does Huawei care so much about memory?
Because hardware is the expensive way to fix the problem. More RAM and bigger flash chips cost real money, and chipmakers are steering ever more capacity towards AI servers, as our look at Samsung’s Pyeongtaek memory push shows. Software that makes 16GB behave like 19GB is cheaper than adding another chip.
My take: this is also about trust. Huawei builds HarmonyOS without Google’s Android underneath, so it has to convince users that its own Ark Engine can match or beat a rival platform. Visible wins such as “you just got 51GB back” make a better argument than benchmark charts.
The catch: every number here comes from Huawei. Independent tests of real-world savings and app relaunch speed have not been published yet.
What happens next
Huawei has not given an exact date for the stable version of HarmonyOS 7. Reports expect it to ship this autumn alongside the Mate 90 series. Watch for three things: independent storage tests on 256GB phones, where every gigabyte counts; whether compressed apps really open without lag; and how the features behave on older models such as the Mate 60.
Deduplication also raises a practical question: what happens if one app “modifies” a shared file? Huawei says editing works normally, which suggests a copy-on-write approach, where a fresh copy is made only at the moment of change. Huawei hasn’t published technical documentation that confirms this.
FAQ
Does HarmonyOS 7 hyperspace storage delete my files?
No. Huawei says it only removes duplicate copies and compresses rarely used apps. Each app keeps its own entry point, and you can still open and edit files as before.
Why didn’t my free space change right after updating?
Some compression runs only while the phone is charging with the screen off. Huawei suggests checking again after a few days.
How much RAM does hyperspace memory add?
Up to 3GB of effective memory on 16GB devices, according to Huawei. Phones with less RAM will likely see smaller gains, and the keep-alive upgrade covers 60+ models.
