Vercel Spend Management now lives in the terminal. Since 23 October 2026, you can set, check and remove a team budget with the new vercel budgets commands, no billing page required.
The catch is one line in the announcement: a budget alone does not stop spending. You have to opt into the pause. Here is how it works.
Key takeaways
- Four commands cover everything:
vercel budgets, set, removeandalerts. - The CLI budget is the same On-Demand Budget shown in your team’s billing settings.
- Adding
--pausepauses production deployments of all projects at 100% of the budget. - You need the Owner or Billing role, and a Pro team or an Enterprise team on the Flexible Commitment plan.
- Checks run periodically, so treat the budget as a guardrail, not a hard ceiling.
What does the new Vercel Spend Management CLI do?
It moves a dashboard feature into your shell. According to the Vercel changelog entry, written by Lakshmi Subbramanian and Bryan Mishkin, teams can view and manage their Spend Management budget from the CLI. The changelog does not name a CLI version number.
Think of it as a prepaid-phone cap for your cloud bill. You pick a number, and Vercel warns you as you approach it. If you ask, it also switches things off when you reach it.
Which four commands do you need?
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
vercel budgets | Shows current spend, the active budget and the three most recent alerts |
vercel budgets set --amount <dollars> | Sets a budget; add --pause to pause production deployments at 100% |
vercel budgets remove --yes | Removes the budget |
vercel budgets alerts | Shows full alert history, with --since, --until, --limit and --json |
To target a specific team, add the scope flag, as in vercel --scope my-team budgets set.
The changelog’s example is simple. With no budget set, vercel budgets reported current spend of $63.33. After vercel budgets set --amount 200 --pause, it showed the budget as active, 32% used, with pause enabled. The alert history listed 50%, 75% and 100% alerts dated 19 to 21 September 2026.
Does a budget actually stop your spending?
Not by itself. Vercel states plainly that setting a budget does not stop usage on its own. Alerts can notify, pause or both, depending on the actions you configure.
The Spend Management docs list three actions at the limit: pause all projects, send notifications, or trigger a webhook. Notifications go out at 50%, 75% and 100% of your amount. The 100% webhook sends an HTTP POST with the budget amount, current spend and team ID, and a separate event fires when the billing cycle ends.
What happens when the pause kicks in?
Only production deployments pause, across every project on the team. Visitors then see a 503 error with the code DEPLOYMENT_PAUSED, per the docs.
Resuming is manual. Each project has to be resumed separately, in the dashboard or through the REST API, and raising the budget does not unpause anything. If you set an amount below your current monthly spend, the configured actions trigger straight away, including the pause.
My opinion: the pause is a smart default for side projects and a risky one for a revenue-critical storefront. Decide on purpose, and test your alert path before you need it.
Who can use it, and what are the catches?
- Roles: managing budgets needs the Owner or Billing role.
- Plans: included at no extra cost for Pro teams and for Enterprise teams on the Flexible Commitment plan. Hobby accounts are paused automatically at free-tier limits instead.
- Timing: the docs say checks run periodically, so notifications, webhooks and pausing can trigger several minutes after you cross the amount. Set your budget below the most you would truly pay.
Vercel’s earlier change to pause production deployments by default shows the direction: tighter guardrails, now scriptable. What happens next
Expect budget checks to show up in scripts and CI. The --json flag on vercel budgets alerts makes that easy, for example to post alert history into a team channel. The CLI reference is the place to watch for new flags.
FAQ
Is the CLI budget separate from the dashboard budget?
No. It is the same On-Demand Budget shown in team billing settings.
Will setting a budget shut my site down?
Only if you add --pause or enable pausing. Then production deployments of all projects pause at 100%.
Who can run these commands?
Team members with the Owner or Billing role, on Pro or Enterprise Flexible Commitment teams.
